Happy - and Healthy - New Year to all!

With less than 12 hours until we ring in 2009, I just had a few topics to review:

1) Abby developed a yucky reaction to her MMR vaccine and she had a fever and it looks like she has the measels - she is covered in a red bumpy rash. It's so sad but luckily she is on the road to recovery and will hopefully be happy and healthy in the new year.

2) The prospect of a new year, new president and hopefully new (and better) economy in '09 is refreshing, to say the least. While 2008 had its share of good times - Abby started the year barely sitting up and eating solid food to ending it by running and eating more than her mom - it also had its share of turmoil. From friends being laid off to retirement funds disappearing and people losing their entire life savings in a ponzi scheme, 2008 will be a year to remember.

3) I wish all of my friends and family who are expecting babies in the new year good luck and good health to the new little boys and girls who will grace us with their presence.

4) I wish my husband Jason good luck with his new job....hopefully he'll love it and they'll love him!

5) And for me - I hope to have continued good health, prosperity and success in 2009!

Happy New Year!

Sun, Sand, Surf and Snow!

We just returned from a fabulous 4 days of warm sun in Puerto Rico with our friends Lauren and Dan and their two kids, Sammi (3) and Jordan (9 months). Abby had so much fun, particularly running around the resort and frolicking in the pool. She played with Baby Jordan and Sammi and ate and splashed around until her little heart was content. Abby was NOT a fan of going into her stroller, which caused her parents an enormous amount of grief numerous times, since everything in her new environment was worth touching, licking and smelling (everything except sand, which she also did not seem to enjoy very much).

Unfortunately, when we returned from the wonderful sun and warm weather, it was less than 24 hours later that the snow started falling here and kept falling, took a break and fell some more, for a total of about 8" of fresh powder and 3" of slush and ice. We dressed Abby up in her snowsuit from last year (note to self: get snow pants for this year as last year's suit was a bit snug!) and Sadie, Abby and I ran around and played in the snow. Turns out she likes walking in the snow more than sitting/playing in it! Sadie, on the other hand, had the time of her life rolling around in the snow and came back inside with icicles stuck to her ears and paws!

Abby also turned 18 months and had her 18-month check-up when we returned from Puerto Rico. She weighed in around 21 lbs, 12 ozs (I say "around" because she was squirming like a fish on the scale), which is around the 15% for girls and finally broke the 30" mark at 30.5" (25%). The doctor was impressed with how she eats and talks and Abby got her final vaccination, the MMR.

Now it's holiday time and so far, after just one night of Hanukkah, Abby has cleaned up with gifts! I am sure everything that she has gotten will provide her with hours of enjoyment on the next snowy day!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year, whether you are lucky enough to be in the sun of Puerto Rico or a big snowstorm (ala NY or Chicago)!

We Are Thankful

Since it's just a few days after Thanksgiving, I figured it's not too late to post a few things I am thankful for this year:

1. My beautiful (and smart!) daughter, who is talking like crazy these days
2. My wonderful husband, who drove 10 hours each way to and from Chicago safely (I drove 3 hours each way) for Thanksgiving
3. My snuggly pooch, who was a great pup in Chicago (other than the two poop accidents at Grandma's house)
4. Still having a job (so far)
5. A fabulous family on both sides
6. Close friends who are supportive and there for us at all times
7. A nanny who so far has been great, reliable and trustworthy and who my daughter adores

All in all, I feel very lucky and thankful this year and want to thank each of you for being a part of our lives in some way. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays!!

Our Little Trickster

Last week, Abster had a little trick up her sleeve...somehow, when our nanny Gaynell was cleaning up lunch in the kitchen, Abby quietly made her way up the flight of stairs to the 2nd floor, then toddled into our bedroom and up another flight of stairs to our loft! Jason heard a little voice say "hi" and turned around to find her at the top of the stairs but Gaynell was nowhere in sight!

When Jason brought her downstairs, Gaynell was horrified to find out what happened. Luckily no one got hurt and it was a good lesson learned and a reminder to check and double check the gates in our house, which are there for good reasons!

In other news, Abby is now saying her name ("Ab-by") and points to herself, which is so cute. She also knows the name of our friend's daughter, Maddy. Every day we hear a new word or name and it's just amazing to watch her development as she approaches 17 months in just 2 days. We have no doubt the best is yet to come with our little girl!

Poor baby

After several rough nights of Abby waking herself up coughing this past weekend, we finally took Abby to the doctor today. As it turns out, the little sniffle and cough she has developed into her very first ear infection! I guess we're lucky that she is almost 17 months and this is her first one, but it's sad nonetheless. It will also be sad for us to have to give her antibiotics twice a day for 2 weeks. Hopefully she'll be on her way to a full recovery soon because I am exhausted!

In other news, Grandma Sheryl came to visit us this weekend and we had a low-key but very nice time together. And I'm probably 10 lbs heavier due to the chocolate cake, pizza and BBQ that we ate when she was here!

Oh, and let me not forget: Happy 60th Birthday to Grandpa Michael today!

Proud to be an American

For the first time in 8 years, I am actually PROUD to be an American! I am so excited and proud of this country for embracing such huge changes and I can't wait to see what the next 4 years will bring. I am happy Abby is growing up in this era and that I am old enough to understand and appreciate how historic this is. Amazing!!!

I've been trying to teach Abby how to say "Obama" but so far she just says "mama" :). Maybe by Jan. 20, 2009 she'll get it!

Halloween

Abby's 2nd Halloween proved to be a fun adventure! She was dressed up as Piglet from Winnie the Pooh and we set off in our neighborhood around 5:30 pm. By 7:00 pm, we had received enough sugar to fuel a car and she was so wiped out that she slept until 8:45 am the next day. She had a great time and even learned how to say "thank you" when someone gave her candy!

Now the problem is that Jason and I are stuck with too much candy. The leftovers will be coming to work with me this week and left for the office to devour.

And now on to the next holiday - Thanksgiving! We're still debating over driving or flying to Chicago. We shall see.....

Success!

I am SO happy to report that the first official week of our new nanny was a success! Gaynell was great and Abby loved her. She was on time, professional, responsible and totally picked up on things (including taking Sadie on walks!) right away. She even babysat for us on Saturday night and survived a short blackout at our house. And my neighbors' two nannies adore her as well, especially since she's been driving them home at night!

Hopefully all will continue in this positive direction because she is so nice and Abby is definitely taking to her. I can hopefully breathe a sigh of relief now.

This past Saturday we took Abby to see Sesame Street Live. I didn't know if she'd be able to sit through the whole thing but she LOVED it! She was so fascinated by singing, dancing Sesame Street characters (esp when they talked about Abby Cadabby!) and was beyond excited when she got a $10 Elmo balloon at intermission. Geniuses, I tell you.

All in all, it was a successful week for everyone, and it was very much needed.

A Fresh Start

Today begins Day One of our new nanny, Gaynell. She did a trial day on Friday and so far, all went well. Hopefully as each day goes by, she'll get more comfortable with Abby and with us and we'll feel more at ease with her. It's just such a strange thing to let a stranger into your house to take care of your most precious goods and to trust them with your child, house and car. I really hope she works out because I can't take another nanny interview at this point! Good luck, Gaynell!

And as for Abby, she turned 16 months yesterday and she is a full-fledged walker and talker. She repeats everything and says so many words, it's crazy. She really has developed so much in the last 2-3 months, it's unbelievable. I cannot believe she'll be 1.5 years in just 2 months! Each day is something new and more fun with her. We're so lucky!!!

Happy Birthday to ME!

I am so not one to tout my own birthday - after all, who really wants to announce that they are a year older?? But today is my birthday and it's been quite a lovely day so far. It started with a box of Munchkins from my neighbors on the train ride to work, then I received a cake, a necklace, flowers, a gift card and a bracelet from work people, and numerous calls/emails from friends. Tonight Jason has arranged for a mint chip ice cream cake to be shared at our house, so I'm looking forward to that - mostly to seeing what Abby thinks of mint chip ice cream, which I'm sure she'll love as much as her parents do!

On the nanny front (aka "saga"), we didn't have to worry about firing our temporary nanny who we increasingly hate each day because she did it herself! She told us she was going back to school 2 days/week and could work for us 3 days/week. Sorry but it's a full-time job! And unfortunately things didn't work out financially with Rebecca (the nanny from last week who I was excited about), so we placed another ad on Craigslist.

We (ok, I) interviewed 4 more people in person and spoke to countless others. We made an offer to one woman on Saturday and she is going to do a trial day with us this week and pending all goes well, she'll start with us next week. Please cross your fingers for us that she is great! I know that's one thing I'll be wishing for over my ice cream cake tonight!

Thank you, Susan!

It's been 3 weeks, 13 interviews, plus numerous phone calls since the new nanny search has begun and I think I might actually have found a gem of a nanny. My friend Susan told me about Rebecca (a friend of her friend's nanny) who I met with over the weekend. She was so nice, had great references and was eager to work with us. She officially accepted our offer today, but still has to resign from her current employer. Assuming they let her go, she'll hopefully start with us in 1-2 weeks. And that day, my friends, cannot come soon enough!

We have a temporary nanny right now (a friend of the nanny next door to us) but we're really not loving her. We liked her when we met her but we've noticed a few issues (nothing terrible, just things we didn't love) and it's only her 2nd day with us. So we need to find a way to gently say goodbye to her once we know when Rebecca can start.

I have to say, this process has been challenging at best - but I hope for our sake and Abby's sake that it gives us a new, more responsible and reliable person who will be with our family for years to come! Or at least until I decide I've had enough of my job and become a SAHM one day....

Try again

So, unfortunately the person we made an offer to yesterday (who, by the way, accepted our offer and told us she would start on 10/6) apparently also accepted an offer with another family who lives in the neighboring town. Nice, huh? Clearly we aren't dealing with the most rational, professional people here, but it's SO frustrating.

How did I find out, you ask? Well, my friends, this IS the information age and through a little savvy networking & asking the right questions, a totally random stranger and I found that we had a very disturbing connection!

This stranger happens to live a few minutes away from me, has a daughter 3 months older than Abby, works a few blocks from my office and also had her nanny not show up one day (after her paid vacation). We agreed that once we both have new nannies, we'll be meeting for a drink! Let's hope that's sooner rather than later....

Updates!

Well, I have a few things to report. I'll start with the good news:

I am proud to announce that I am FINALLY the mother of a walking child! Yes, folks, that is right, Abby has been taking about 6-8 unassisted steps as of this past weekend! She stands up by herself, walks a few steps and then falls down but does it all over again! It's so cute and I'm so excited and proud! I'm sure she'll be running around like crazy and I'll be missing the crawling days soon enough, but for now I love watching the joy on her face as she walks like a drunken sailor around the house.

We went for her 15-month dr app't yesterday and she weighs in at around 21 lbs (she was moving a bit on the scale, but it was just around 21) and she grew an inch to 29 1/4"! My little petite princess....

On a slightly disturbing note, our nanny Nicole didn't show up to work last Monday, leaving us confused, upset and clearly angry. We don't know what happened or why she decided to not come back - a call or email from her would have been helpful with that regard - but we're currently looking for a new nanny. It's upsetting because we thought we treated her very well, giving her tons of vacation days, buying anything she wanted, etc... but apparently she either found a new/better job or decided she'd had enough of us. Sad since Abby adored her and I know she felt the same - a few weeks ago, she told me that Abby was the best baby she's ever taken care of. Who knows....it might always be a mystery.

The good news is that we've been interviewing like crazy and have found some good people who also drive - hooray!! We made an offer to one person and we're supposed to hear from her tonight - hopefully it will work out because Jason and I both loved her the minute we met her. Stay tuned!!!

Just let go

As Abby nears the 15-month mark, it is becoming quite clear to me that she is an early "talker," not an early "walker." Every day it seems she says new words - lately, aside from my favorite word (MAMA - which is now said in a wonderful way, not in a 'help me' sort of way), she's saying all sorts of things, like cheese, Nicole (our nanny - "cole"), blueberry and tree, among them.

But she still won't let go and walk by herself! She can walk holding on to anything (our bar stools, mommy's hand, the wall, her baby doll stroller, etc.) but the minute she lets go, she plops down and crawls. Is it laziness or is she just scared? I have no idea but I'm ready for her to walk already. A park is much more fun when you can walk! So is a zoo, museum and a mall! We know she'll get there at some point - but WHEN?!?! It's painful to watch all of Abby's younger friends start walking and she's still hanging out on her knees on the floor.

Any suggestions for helping her to let go already are welcome!

Updates

Well, the inevitable happened following my last post. I caught what Abby/Nicole had - a yucky flu-type bug that had me doing all sorts of gross things I'd rather not share publicly. Luckily, it lasted only 24 hours (Labor Day) and it even helped me lose 4 lbs! Jason was a lifesaver and took great care of me and Abby. Thank goodness, since if I was home alone with Abby, she would have been taken care of by Sadie (our dog) all day.

But in other good news, this weekend Abby FINALLY said MAMA!!!! Full disclosure - it was and since has been said only in duress (as in mid-cry), but I'll take it! Hopefully she'll discover that she can use it for other instances as well (as in "Hi Mama!" or "Mama, look what I did!").

Abby has also been a bit of a cranky pants lately - we figure another tooth is on its way in, but she has definitely not been her normal, happy self the past few days. Between her and I being sick, going away for a few days and not having Nicole around to help out, Jason and I are a bit tired, to say the least!! We hope the next week proves to be a bit easier in our household!

My poor baby

Ok, so as we learned this past Sunday night, perhaps our beloved nanny didn't have food poisoning as we thought and really had a virus. We discovered this as Abby woke up and proceeded to vomit about 3 days worth of food and did not stop for about 5 hours. Needless to say, Sunday was quite a sad and bad night in my house.

Abby then had a fever, the sniffles, refused to eat/drink and slept - a lot - over the next 2 days. She finally seemed to be back to herself this morning, although she is still refusing to drink anything but a few sips of water.

And not to entirely blame our nanny, who could very well have had food poisoning, Abby did go to a gym class on Friday morning, so it's possible she picked up a nasty bug there. Those places are filled with germy kids and toys.

Jason took her to the dr. today and they confirmed that it was/is a virus and would make its way out of her system soon. We learned that Abby weighed in at 20 lbs, 1 oz, a whopping 3 ozs more than she was 2.5 months ago. We think she probably lost some weight the past few days. Needless to say, we've been anxiously awaiting the return of our happy little girl and look forward to her downing a sippy cup of milk soon.

The Nanny Diary

Sunday night, my beloved nanny called us to say she was having stomach issues all weekend and wasn't going to be in on Monday. I happily emailed my boss to tell her I had to stay home - after all, an extra day with Abby when she or I weren't sick would be great. We hung out at the pool, had a nice breakfast/lunch together and then settled in for the night knowing our nanny would be back the next day.

Well - not so much. 7:30 a.m. (when our nanny usually arrives) came and went and she was a no-show. She's been working with us for 10 months now and that has NEVER happened, so I was not only worried about her but rather annoyed as well. I called her nanny friend at my neighbor's house and she had heard from her the night before saying she'd be in the next day, so I was even more confused and worried. Luckily Jason was able to be with her so he stayed home.

I finally reached my nanny at 9 am and she sounded awful. She said she had just gotten home from the hospital, where she went the night before, because she couldn't stop throwing up (TMI, I know). Apparently she had a severe case of food poisoning and a high fever and was dehydrated. And in her haste leaving for the hospital, she didn't take her cell phone. Needless to say, I was happy to hear she was alive but still pretty pissed I didn't get a call from her mother or daughter, both of whom could easily have reached me. She promised to call me later in the night to make sure she was ok to come in today.

I got home and Jason had spent a very nice day with Abby, who apparently was so wiped out that she took two 2+ hour naps! However, Jason forgot one little thing - to change her out of her pajamas - so when I got home at 6:15 pm, she was still in her jammies from the night before!

I also thought it would be a good idea to throw Abby's laundry in so that was one less thing our nanny would have to do today. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that there was an item of pink clothing which had never been washed before and now everything she owns has a nice shade of pink to it.

Let's just say I was more than thrilled to see our nanny this morning and have her restore some sanity to our house!

But - we will most definitely be having a chat about being responsible and having someone call us in the event that she can't reach us herself. In the meantime, I'm happy knowing Abby is being well taken care of today and hopefully her pink onesies can return to their normal shade of white!

Say Mommy, dammit!

I just would like to point out that every day Abby is saying new words but get this - STILL NOT MOM/MAMA/MOMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am DYING! She can CLEARLY say Sadie, bye-bye, Hi Daddy, All done, dog and a few other words that are almost very clear (blueberry, for example). It is absolutely ridiculous. Why will my child not say mommy?!?!?! She'll probably be able to recite the declaration of independence in French before she says those 5 letters together at this rate......

The Stairmaster

We got one this weekend! No, not the exercise equipment - the baby! Abby is now 100% climbing stairs (up) by herself. Of course she doesn't know how to get back down herself yet, which poses a small challenge. But we're sure she'll get it soon, or else we'll be getting our fair share of exercise (which wouldn't be a bad thing).

We also got sucked into watching non-stop coverage of the Olympics....between swimming, diving, gymnastics and fencing (just kidding), we are debating what sport Abby will likely excel in. My bet is on swimming since she is a total fish in the water but she is quite flexible, and a little on the short side, so gymnastics isn't out of the question yet!

Seriously?

So we packed up the family truckster and headed to Boston this weekend to celebrate Cousin Karen's wedding to now Cousin Elliot. With plenty of snacks, music and toys, Jason, Abby, Sadie and I headed out on Friday morning, just at what I thought was the "right" (i.e. Abby's nap) time, 9 am, certain that after a big breakfast of waffles, yogurt and eggs, she'd fall right to sleep.
NO SUCH LUCK. My child, who is admittedly a great napper at home, absolutely refused to fall asleep during the 4-hour ride to Boston. She "talked" and screeched and played and laughed, but did not nap. Seriously?!?! I fall asleep the minute we hit the highway (as a passenger) and my 13-month-old refuses to nap in the car.
After we arrived in Boston and met friends for lunch, Abby did humor us with a 1.5 hour nap in the hotel. Needless to say, she went to bed earlier than normal that night.

On Sunday, I must have been delusional to think that she'd nap on the way home - after all, we left at 11 am (well past her normal nap time) and certainly she'd be tired enough to nod off. NOPE, NADA, NO WAY, JOSE. This kid will not nap in the car!!!! We tried everything - soft, classical music, paci, doggy, blankie, etc. and nothing. And I knew she was tired because she was yawning and rubbing her eyes. Of course when we got home at 3 pm, she took a 2-hour nap, only to be woken up by Sadie barking (thanks, pup).

Which leads me to think that either: a) she doesn't nap b/c she is too curious about what is going on outside when we are driving or b) she doesn't nap b/c she is not in the car that often (never really during the week and mostly short trips on the weekend) and isn't used to sleeping sitting up. I truly find it so bizarre that Dr. Eisenberg might be getting a call from me to get some tips, other than drugging her up with Benadryl on the next trip!

A first for Abby

So we had a FIRST last night and it was NOT walking or saying Mama....we got Abby undressed for her bath as we always do and she was crawling around "nakie" in her bedroom while I grabbed her towel from her closet. Jason was next to her and all the sudden he goes, "Oh my god! Come here now!" And I come over and there are TWO HUGE TURDS where Abby was!!! She literally pooped on her floor in the 2 seconds neither of us were looking, and she had just had a poop about 20 mins before! And there was a little bit of pee as well. It was all good - the poop was solid (thank goodness) and we have Nature's Miracle stain/odor remover from Sadie's accidents so we sprayed some on the carpet and it was gone. But Jason and I were cracking up, it was too funny. I guess there is a first for everything with babies!

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Last weekend, I embarked on a new adventure: taking Abby on a plane by myself. I knew it could be tricky to have her in my seat with no other help, so I planned accordingly: lots of snacks, a DVD player, 3 DVDs, a book, toys and a prayer that she'd take a nap.

On the way to Chicago, we were very lucky that the flight was on time, and while there were no empty seats so we could spread out, she did pretty well on the flight. She was curious and wanted to play with the man next to us (who was trying to sleep) and played with/munched on the American Airlines menu, in-between lunch and playing with (not watching) her DVD. [Oh, and note to self: do not bring anything with red sauce for food on a plane, as it will end up on the seat, window and clothing. Oops.] She didn't nap but of course she did fall asleep in her stroller when I was waiting for my rental car at the airport. Oh well.

We had a lovely weekend, seeing family & friends and going to a work event. Abby had a lot of fun exploring her Grandma's apartment and checking out her new surroundings.

And then we had to leave. As it was, I was dreading the trip home alone - the way there wasn't terrible but it wasn't terribly easy, either. We boarded the very full plane on time, taxied out to the runway....and sat there for TWO HOURS while we waited for good ol' LGA to let us fly out. OMG. My worst fear had come true. And of course they don't tell you it's going to be 2 hours, they let you think that it will only be "30 minutes" or "15 more minutes" which we kept hearing over and over. The plane was hot and crowded and Abby did not want any part of sitting in a tiny seat on my lap. She wasn't crying but she wasn't exactly having a ball, though either was I, as I tried to give her snacks, play her DVD and entertain a 13-month-old in a 4" x 4" space. She didn't want to nap and did, however, enjoy touching the guy next to us with her messy little fingers.

Alas, we took off 2 hours late and both of us were exhausted. My little munchkin fell asleep on my lap 3 hours after we first boarded the plane, and not a moment too soon to give mommy a break. She was so wiped out that she didn't wake up for those annoying "flight attendants, prepare for landing" announcements, the actual landing or when the seatbelt sign went off. I had to wake her up so I could get my bags together and get off the plane.

We then had to wait while daddy and Sadie made their way through Sunday night traffic to get us at the airport, with me feeding her dinner in her stroller. She finally went to sleep around 9:45 pm and like my child, slept until 9:15 am the next day! I wish I had done that, too, since I needed a vacation from that day!

All in all, she was such a good baby but I learned a valuable lesson: spend the extra cash to buy the baby his/her own seat when you are traveling alone (unless they are really tiny) - it's worth it to be able to spread out and not have to hold him/her on your lap for hours! Our next flight with Abby is in late September, also to Chicago, but this time daddy will be doing all the work!

All done!

This weekend was the Fourth of July, otherwise known as spending 4 wonderful days with Abby.

On Thursday, Jason and I took her into the city (NYC, that is) for some Central Park swing action, a visit to Grandpa's office and dinner with Grandma, Grandpa and Great-Grandma. Abby was so exhausted that she passed out in the car on the way home and when we got home, she was changed and went right to sleep. We were "all done" as Abby now likes to say - after spending the day in hot and muggy NYC, it was nice to be back home and still have 3 more days to chill.

On the 4th, Abster slept until 8:30 (yay!) and we took her and Sadie on a little hike at the Rockefeller estate near our house. There are hundreds of acres of trails and we explored a few of them (pictures below), with Sadie sniffing her way along and Abby "moo"ing at the cows and laughing at the horses we saw on some of the trails. It was so nice and we would love to go back there again for a longer hike, now that we know what to expect. It must have wiped Abby out because she then napped for 3.5 hours (!!!) before we headed over to Aunt Julie and Uncle Peter's house for a July 4th BBQ.

Saturday brought some errands (Bloomies and Target, to be exact) and a dinner party at Carrie & Gary's apartment with two other babies (Jake is 2 and Judah is 9 months). Abby and Judah had a little "thing" going when she went to give him a kiss and he embraced her in a hug!!

Our last day of the weekend started when Abby woke up at 9 am (could I have a better child?!) and we took a trip to Stew Leonard's (our fave grocery store) where Abby laughed her way around the store at the Chiquita Banana lady dancing, the dairy cow moo'ing, the 3 dancing cows and the fishy fisherman doing gymnastics. In the afternoon, we went over to Auntie Clay and Uncle Brad's house for a little BBQ with our neighbors. Speaking of neighbors, we were excited to find out that Abby has a new next-door neighbor, Madeline Joy, who arrived yesterday morning. Congrats to Madeline's parents Melissa and Raph!

All in all, it was a fun and fairly relaxing weekend, with Abby practicing saying "All done" and "Hi Daddy" (but STILL no mommy) and pointing out cows and horses along the way. Is it Friday yet???

My one-year-old

Well, Abby is officially ONE! We had a great weekend celebration, including a trip to the Bronx Zoo, the first taste of milk & birthday cake, the one-year check-up, a pet parade in our town, a pool birthday party, a Crumbs cupcake and visits from friends and family! Oh - and we're officially done with bottles - hooray!

Bronx Zoo - Abby loved it! She particularly liked the elephants, rhinos and buffalos. Who doesn't?!? She had so much fun at the zoo with mom and dad, who were inspired to become members of the zoo. Hopefully we'll go again in the next year to make it worth our while!

Birthday cake - She was a little confused at first (what is this, and why is everyone staring at me?) but after a taste of frosting, she was sold. It was so cute watching her dig into her cake and make a big ol' mess.

Milk - Loved it! We went cold turkey on the milk and she did great!

One-year Check-up - The day after her birthday, Abby weighed in at 19 lbs, 14 ozs (25%) and was 28 1/4 inches (25%). While mommy was a bit sad with her low percentages, it came as no surprise given her parents' height (or lack thereof). She is doing great and is healthy and on track for her age. The dr thinks she'll be walking soon - which we know from seeing her cruise all over the house holding on to toys, people, furniture, etc.

Birthday Party - With close friends & family around us, we celebrate Abby's first birthday at our pool. Of course it was not without some turbulence before, which included a board member being annoyed at our balloons/banners at the pool, a call from the property manager, the balloon store not finding our balloon order right away and Jason not being happy with the sandwich selection at the caterer. Of course, Abby did not know any of this as she swam, ate and played with her guests. Luckily the weather was a perfect 85 degrees and sunny for her day! Next year we'll be letting someone else handle the food & decor!

Bottles - Abby drank from her last bottle the night of her birthday...we're officially done now! She is doing great with the sippy cup and I'm relieved to free up some of my counter space.

Gifts - Abby is one lucky girl! From adorable summer clothes to interactive toys and good, old-fashioned cash, Abby cleaned up on her first! Now mommy better get crackin' on writing the thank-you notes!!

All in all, it was a great weekend. Abby's Grandma Sheryl came in from Chicago to celebrate her birthday as well, Abby's "Aunt" LT, "Uncle" DT and "cousins" Sammi & Jordan stayed with us and mommy even took a few days off work to plan, execute and recover from the weekend.

I can't believe my little girl is ONE!!

Moo!

Now when we ask Abby "what does a cow say?", she goes "moooo!" It's really adorable!

25.5 hours until she is one!

Birthday Week

This week last year I was as big as a house and as anxious to meet my baby girl as can be. I tried everything to induce labor - long walks up hills with my dog, spicy food and some of the other "usual" tricks. But little Abby did not want to make her debut early and in my and Jason's usual style, appeared a day late after being medically induced (and removed by c-section!).

Today, just 362 days after she was born, I am doing so much reminiscing about this time last year. I can't believe how much she has changed. I can't imagine another year of her life where she develops, changes and grows so dramatically.

I can't wait to see what this time next year will bring us - though I long for her to stay as tiny as she was on June 19, 2007, at all 6 lbs and 2 ozs of her, I eagerly await Abby's first steps alone, her first "I love you, mommy" and everything else that comes with being a "big girl." For now, though, I'm enjoying the last few days of my daughter's first year.

Stay tuned here for how emotional I'll be 3 days from now....

Water Baby

So, my daughter LOVES being in water! YAY!! This weekend it was hotter than hell so we took her to two different pools, plopped her into a baby raft and off she went, kicking & splashing to her heart's delight. Of course the mom in me was worried, especially in light of the recent "dry drowning" news that hit the Today Show 3 days ago, but I was also thrilled to see her enjoying it so much. Let's be honest - swimming is not exactly a hot sport in my family! Our family is easily found on the ski slopes or golf course - but a pool?? Not so much.
Apparently my little water baby is going to change that!!

And Abby has also been showing off her splashing & kicking skills in the bath tub as well, happy as a little clam.

Hopefully she'll stay this happy in water all summer!

Three Weeks to Go

With just 3 weeks until Abby turns 1, I've been reflecting back to this time last year quite a bit. Last year at this time, I was a million months pregnant (or so it seemed) and so anxious to meet my baby girl. I had no idea what to expect (other than a girl) and could not have known the joy and overwhelming emotions I'd feel when she arrived, or the feeling of pure love and happiness I'd have watching her grow up.

I feel that this year has been such a huge blessing for Jason and I and I just want to thank all of our family and friends for sharing in such an amazing year with your good thoughts, wishes and love. Abigail is very lucky to have all of you in her life!!

It's Never Too Late to Start

Well, my daughter is 22 days away from turning one, but I figured it's not too late to start documenting her milestones, achievements, blunders, and more for our family and friends. I'll try to update this as much as I can, or when something "big" happens. Ideally, I'd like Abby to have this as a journal of her early years, before she can do it herself. I hope you enjoy it!

I'll try to do a mini re-cap for those of you who I wish I talked to on a more regular basis!

At 11.5 months old, Abby can:
Get into a sitting position
Get into hands-and-knees position
Crawl
Pull herself up to stand
Use pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger)
Say “dada," "boy," "dog" (no mama yet!!)
Try to imitate words
Respond to “no” and simple verbal requests
Shake her head “no”
Knows where her head and eyes are
Wave bye-bye
Clap on demand or if something is exciting
Give/blow a kiss
Drink from a sippy cup
Feed herself
Look at (and sometimes point to) a correct picture when an image is named

During the week, my little girl is changed, fed, played with and learns from her fabulous nanny, Nicole. I anxiously await 6:15 pm when I come home and she gives me a huge smile and gets so excited to see me. I either take her (and her dog Sadie) on a walk or play with her, then prepare her dinner. Daddy gives her a bath and then it's off to bed around 8 pm.

Abby is such a happy baby - and it probably helps that she is a good eater AND sleeper! She sleeps about 12 hours per night and takes 1-2 naps per day.

Abby's favorite foods so far are:
Puffs/Cheerios
Sweet potatoes
Chicken
Fruit (bananas in particular)
Pasta with marinara
French toast/pancakes
Yogurt
Cheese
Carrots

And unlike her mommy, she even eats fish and lots of veggies!

I hope this helps you catch up on what Abby has been up to for the past 11.5 months! No doubt she'll continue to amaze and suprise us as each day passes, and I look forward to sharing Abby's adventures with all of you!
